Podcast: Getting Yourself "Bootcamp Ready" Before You Start Dating
If you're thinking about getting back into dating, you might be wondering, "Where do I even start?"
Well, before you jump onto the dating apps, start swiping and organise that first date, I want to suggest something a little different.
Get yourself dating bootcamp ready.
And by that, I don't mean changing how you look or becoming someone you're not.
I mean getting emotionally prepared for dating.
The first question I'd encourage you to ask yourself is:
"Am I actually ready for a relationship, or am I simply looking for someone to make me feel better?"
There's nothing wrong with wanting companionship. But if you're still carrying significant hurt from your last relationship, it can be helpful to acknowledge that before bringing those emotions into something new.
"Getting ready to date isn't about becoming someone new. It's about knowing who you already are before someone else gets a say in it."
Secondly, think about what you actually want.
Are you looking for a long-term relationship? Companionship? Something casual?
You don't need to have your entire future mapped out, but knowing your intentions can help you recognise people who are looking for something similar.
Third, think about your boundaries.
What are your non-negotiables? What behaviours won't you accept? What values are important to you in a partner?
And perhaps most importantly, think about your own self-worth.
Dating can involve rejection. Someone might not call you back. They might not feel the same connection that you do.
That doesn't mean there's something wrong with you.
It's simply part of dating.
So, before you start looking for the right person, spend a little time becoming comfortable with who you are.
Ask yourself:
- What have I learned from my previous relationships?
- What do I want this time around?
- What kind of partner do I want to be?
- And what kind of relationship would actually make my life better?
Because being "dating ready" isn't about being perfect.
It's about being self-aware, emotionally available and prepared to build something healthy with another person.
So, before you swipe right on someone else...
Maybe swipe right on yourself first.
